Treat your Spine with LOVE

Taking care of your spine before any problems arise is the first line of defense against back and neck pain. Even for those who already suffer from back issues, the following suggestions can help to reduce symptoms.

Mind and Body

The first thing to remember is the connection between the mind and body. Doing mind and bodysome kind of mindfulness exercise, be it sitting meditation or yoga, keeps you present and reduces stress, which is as underlying factor in many illnesses. You can make almost any activity into a mindfulness meditation. Doing the dishes, cleaning, walking and running can all be forms of meditation. Massage Therapy and acupuncture are a couple other ideas to consider for strengthening the mind and body.

Exercise

Walking, raking leaves, working out in the gym and swimming (which takes pressure off all the joints) are a few of the many ways you can get your daily exercise in. Developing
an exercise routine is not only good for the spine but also for your overall health. Make time, whether it is an hour or a half hour per day to perform physical activity. It can be hard to start this routine, but it will quickly become a habit.

Sleep

To improve the health of your body and mind, at least seven hours of restful sleep is needed. Having a mattress and pillows that are comfortable and supportive is also important. Sleep with your spine straight, using pillows to support this position if you typically lay on your side.

Heatheat

Using a heating pad after a long day goes a long way to relaxing the spine. A nice hot shower or bath also helps.

Massage

Indulge yourself and your spine now and then with a massage.
